I am a Fine Arts Specialist teaching general music with Albuquerque Public Schools. I graduated with honors from the University of New Mexico in December of 2013 with a Bachelor's in Music Education. I am an instrumental musician with primary focus on the bassoon and the saxophone. In addition to teaching elementary school I continue to perform with groups such as the Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bosque Bassoon Band. I am also active in the 44th Army Band of the New Mexico National Guard.
I believe that music education is especially important in the elementary schools. The skills and concepts that we teach in general music can easily be carried to other subject areas and other classrooms. Many of the rhythm activities, songs, and instrumental activities have a direct connection to Math. Many of the songs that we sing, books, and music that we listen help to reinforce concepts found in English and Social Studies. Music can help to create connections between these subjects as well as presenting material in a new way that helps some students understand concepts that they have been struggling with. It is my responsibility as a music educator to give your children a well-rounded education involving Music, English, Math, and Social Studies.
The students have been and will continue to use very expensive instruments almost every day. These instruments help to build fine motor skills as well as teaching about responsibility in terms of taking care of the instruments and making sure that they do not get broken. The students are taught the proper way of playing and holding the instruments and the older students are taught how to play and sing at the same time.
I encourage you to ask your child about what they learn in music each week or even to sing or play a song for you that they have learned. We do beat-keeping activities, songs, and dances almost every day. As I continue to build this website many of those songs and dances will be available as video or audio recordings.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any comments, questions, or concerns.
