The Video Game Effect, turning songs into games
This week I talked about the video game effect and how we can use Activ Inspire and the promethean board to extend a kindergarten and 1st grade lesson.
The song, "I have a little snowman" is featured in this video,
I have a little snowman
He is so fat and round
I made him from a snowball,
I rolled upon the ground
I gave him eyes, a nose, a mouth
A nice warm scarf of red,
I put some buttons on his coat
A hat upon his head
Watch him as he melts to the ground.
we can use the fact that students are surrounded by video games to our advantage as teachers. If we can find a way to present new information, or to expand upon old information by playing games, students are more likely to retain the information that you want them to be learning. I use the promethean board, white board, manipulatives, pretty much anything that I can think of to make a game out of a song or dance. We still get through the entire lesson, and my entire lesson is not based around playing games, but I find that incorporating one game a day, even if it is a two minute activity, helps keep the engagement level of my students very high.
